Building a Narrative Against Online Charter Schools

Seeking yet another opportunity to discredit online public charter schools, advocacy journalist Jessica Calefati has filed her latest based largely on teacher union taking points.

Calefati – who has a reputation of ignoring facts to justify an anti-charter narrative – now advocates CTA’s latest effort to fight “the coordinated agenda by a group of billionaires to divert money from California’s neighborhood public schools to privately-managed charter schools.”

It’s remarkable that for all the concerns of billionaire scapegoats running public schools, Calefati fails to interview any online charter school parents who are simply seeking a better education option for their student.

Vowing to fight public school profiteering, Democratic state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would either block or seriously limit for-profit companies’ ability to operate charter schools in California.

The two proposals seek to address a growing concern among legislators that Wall Street-traded companies managing some of the state’s charters are raking in mountains of state aid while providing students a poor education.
