America is a land where everyone is “created equal,” according to our Declaration of Independence. Yet some of America’s elites want to keep the rest of us down by thwarting charter schools – which have been the stepping-stone to success for millions of schoolchildren, especially in the inner cities. This drama is playing out now in Illinois. Which, you would think, has enough problems with its state treasury going bankrupt.
Gov. Bruce Rauner recently signed legislation expanding school choice, including for charters. But of those who opposed the bill, notes Kristen McQueary in the Chicago Tribune, “Many lawmakers voted against the bill because they oppose school choice, even though they had it themselves…. They haven’t talked to parents desperate to find safer learning environments for their children.”
That’s the point. If you’re part of the “elite,” you can wait years or decades. But if it’s your kid stuck in a hideous, underperforming, even violent school, then you can’t wait. Which is why charters are the solution – now.
