Teachers Unions Still Gunning for Charters

It’s an old debate tactic: When losing on the facts, attack your opponent’s character. That’s what’s going on with the continued attack by California’s teachers unions against charter schools.

An Orange County Register editorial noted: “California’s teachers unions have long held an outsized influence on education policy, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into political campaigns and lobbying public officials over the past two decades.

“While they still wield considerable political influence, unions’ efforts in recent years to undermine the growing charter school movement have fallen flat, as this month’s election of two pro-charter candidates to the Los Angeles Unified school board demonstrated.”

The paper also wrote, “U.S. News and World Report’s recent 2017 high school rankings featured six charter schools in the top 10.” What a ringing endorsement for charters!

Instead of embracing that success, and using charters’ innovative methods to reform traditional public schools, the unions have gone on the attack: “In recent years, the California Teachers Association and California Federation of Teachers, and United Teachers Los Angeles, have made a point of senselessly demonizing charter schools.”

Sadly, despite their defeat in the LAUSD election, “The unions clearly haven’t learned anything, regurgitating their hollow scripts following the election, complaining about the other side’s campaign spending.”
